Several types of tools are used to perform different types of operations on lathe. Generally, single-point cutting tools are used whose cutting edge is ground with the necessary angle and clearance. In addition to this multi-point tools are also used on lathe according to work such as drill, reamer, etc.

KINDS OF SINGLE-POINT CUTTING TOOLS

Generally following single-point lathe-cutting tools are used:

1. Solid Tools: 

These tools are generally made from high-speed steel having square or rectangular cross sections. The whole tool is made from one metal, therefore it is called a solid tool. It is directly held in the tool post and used.

2. Bit Tools: 

These tools are made from high steel with a small amount of cobalt having a square cross-section. These tools are generally found in 5 to 15 mm square and 75 to 150 mm length. This tool is held in the tool holder and used.

3. Tipped Tools: 

This tool has a carbon steel shank and a tip of tungsten or cobalt steel is brazed at the end of the shank. This tool is generally used for turning hard metals.
